Don’t let the unassuming facade fool you — step up to this informal Boardwalk window for a melt-in-your-mouth, local-favorite cheeseburger that’ll have you revelling in its perfect simplicity. The Win-Dow makes their burgers smashburger-style, with patties smashed on the flat-top grill to maximize flavor, cooked with caramelized onions until crisp, covered in American cheese, then carefully arranged in the freshest, softest brioche bun on a bed of house sauce and pickles (they also offer a Beyond versions of the burger for herbivore friends).

The Rose Venice
The Rose, a Venice standby since 1979, is a lofty, boho-chic all-day eatery with two patios, a bar, and a bakery, serving rustic Californian cuisine. With a space that pays homage to longtime Venice Beach roots, step inside for walls lined by local artists’ work — a mix of modern, whimsical, and historic that nods to Venice’s rapidly-changing landscape. We suggest the cacio e pepe and the fire-roasted chicken.

BARS & RESTAURANTS

Felix
Felix has everything of an Italian trattoria. A green wallpaper completes the warm decor of a nonna’s home, friendly service, a Tuscan grill, and a wood-fired oven. At the heart of the dining room, you’ll find the highlight of the show: a temperature-controlled pasta laboratory where you can admire Evan Funke and his chefs work the pasta dough by hand. Be sure to order the well-oiled sfincione focaccia, pesto trofie from Cinque Terre, zucchini flowers stuffed with fior di latte mozzarella, cacio e pepe tonnarelli, and parmesan-covered polpette, swimming in a delicious salsa verde.

Gjelina
The delicacy of their mozzarella and orange-tinted cherry tomato pizza, the refined decor, the necessity to book ahead in order to avoid the line on a Saturday lunch, the gnocchi with brown butter and truffle honey, the ricotta pancakes which sell out faster than a Rolling Stones concert…we could go on, but just trust us when we say that Gjelina is a Venice staple for a reason.

Valle
Effectively an Oaxaca-Venice mashup when it comes to flavors, Valle Venice—from the guys behind Gjusta and Gjelina—churns out the food you crave come Friday night. The plates, bowls, salads, and sides explode with taste. A hearty shellfish pozole verde, a couple of barbacoa tacos, kanpachi ceviche, and a squash blossom quesadilla on a blue corn tortilla—all washed down with a spicy marg or aqua fresca—is heaven after a long week of lunches al desko.

The Butcher’s Daughter
As the name does not suggest, The Butcher’s Daughter is a vegan canteen. From their first shop in Nolita, they kept the most popular dishes: spicy kale Caesar, black bean burger, and the famous smashed avocado toast. The large communal table right off Abbott Kinney is also welcoming new dishes like wood-fired pizzas, cauliflower steak frites, and hand-made pasta with milk-free mozzarella. A former baker from Bouchon takes care of pastries, including a deliciously sacrilegious vegan croissant.

Gjusta
If the early bird catches the best waves, they would certainly catch Gjusta’s baklava croissant as well. A perfect buttery pastry topped with crushed pistachios and powdered sugar…if you happen to be a late riser, take the raspberry rhubarb galette, which has big chunks of fruit covered in brown sugar grains. If Gjusta’s small rickety tables on the patio intimidate you, they also excel at takeout: think traditional cheese, cured fish, and meat. Everything at Gjusta is incredibly good, the most difficult task is to choose. And to wait in line.

Dudley Market
Cozied up in an unassuming corner off the Venice Beach boardwalk within earshot of the surf lies the local hangout and unpretentious wine bar Dudley Market. On the menu du jour: “sustainable seafood,” which is really LA-speak for locally caught crudo, the freshest sashimi you’ve ever tasted, and shucked oysters so good, they actually do come with a disclaimer: Buy twelve rounds and the thirteenth’s free.

Chulita
The best part about Chulita isn’t the charming rattan chairs or the vibrant greenery cascading down the walls. It’s the fact that it’s one of the few places tucked away on Rose Avenue—and in the greater Venice area, for that matter—where you can walk in, grab a couple stools at the bar, and order from an extensive list of top-shelf, artisanal tequilas. It’s a taco spot that moonlights as a damn good mezcal bar. And in Venice—the land of beer and wine—those liquor licenses are essentially a luxury currency. Our best advice: Snag a seat on the patio, order the serrano-infused mezcal, and don’t skip the coliflor fundido.
